Patient Education
Understanding your treatment helps you get the best results. Here are some of the topics we discuss with patients regularly.
Understanding Prosthodontic Treatment
Prosthodontic treatment focuses on restoring and replacing teeth to improve function, appearance, and oral health. Treatments range from a single crown to full mouth reconstruction, and Dr. Rasmussen will walk you through exactly what your case involves.
What to Expect During Treatment
Most prosthodontic procedures involve multiple appointments. Diagnostic records, impressions, and imaging are gathered first. From there, Dr. Rasmussen develops a detailed plan and walks you through each phase of treatment, including timelines and what to expect at every step.
Long-Term Success
The longevity of dental restorations depends on good oral hygiene, regular checkups, and following care instructions. We provide specific guidance for each type of restoration -- whether it is an implant, denture, crown, or veneer -- so you know exactly how to protect your investment.
Home Care Instructions
Proper home care is essential to the success and longevity of your dental work.
After a Procedure
Follow all post-operative instructions provided by Dr. Rasmussen. This typically includes managing discomfort with recommended medications, eating soft foods for the first few days, and avoiding hard or sticky foods near the treatment area. Contact our office if you experience unusual pain, swelling, or bleeding.
Caring for Implants
Dental implants require the same care as natural teeth: brushing twice daily, flossing around the implant, and using an antimicrobial mouth rinse if recommended. Attend regular follow-up visits so Dr. Rasmussen can monitor the implant and surrounding tissue.
Caring for Dentures
Remove and rinse dentures after eating. Brush them daily with a soft denture brush and a non-abrasive cleanser -- never regular toothpaste. Soak dentures overnight in water or a denture solution. Continue to brush your gums, tongue, and palate each morning before inserting your dentures.
Caring for Crowns, Bridges & Veneers
Brush and floss around crowns and bridges carefully, paying special attention to the gum line. Use a floss threader or interdental brush to clean under bridge pontics. Avoid biting directly into hard objects. For veneers, use a non-abrasive toothpaste and avoid habits like nail biting or chewing on ice.
Why See a Prosthodontist
A prosthodontist is a dental specialist with three to four years of advanced training beyond dental school, focused entirely on the restoration and replacement of teeth. While a general dentist can handle many dental needs, a prosthodontist brings a deeper level of expertise to complex cases.
You may benefit from seeing a prosthodontist if you:
- Are missing one or more teeth and want to explore implant or denture options
- Need a full mouth reconstruction or extensive restorative work
- Have worn, broken, or failing dental work that needs to be replaced
- Want a cosmetic smile makeover with veneers or bonding
- Have jaw-related issues that affect your bite or comfort
- Were born with missing or malformed teeth
- Have experienced facial trauma affecting your teeth or jaw
Dr. Rasmussen completed his specialty residency at the Mayo Clinic and brings that advanced training to every case he treats. Whether your needs are simple or complex, you are in experienced hands.
Frequently Asked Questions
A prosthodontist is a dental specialist who has completed three to four additional years of training beyond dental school, focusing on the restoration and replacement of teeth. Prosthodontists are experts in dental implants, crowns, bridges, dentures, veneers, and full mouth reconstruction.
While many of our patients are referred by their general dentist, a referral is not required. You are welcome to contact our office directly to schedule an appointment. We accept both referred and self-referred patients.
The dental implant process typically takes three to six months from the initial implant placement to the final restoration. This timeline allows for proper healing and integration of the implant with the jawbone. Some cases may be completed faster, while more complex cases may take longer. Dr. Rasmussen will provide a detailed timeline during your consultation.
Most patients report that the implant procedure is less uncomfortable than they expected. Local anesthesia is used during the procedure, and post-operative discomfort is typically manageable with over-the-counter pain medication. Dr. Rasmussen will discuss pain management options with you before your procedure.
Proper denture care includes daily cleaning with a denture brush and solution (not regular toothpaste), removing them at night, soaking them in water or denture solution overnight, and scheduling regular checkups for adjustments. Dr. Rasmussen and our team will provide detailed care instructions specific to your dentures.
Rasmussen Prosthodontics is a fee-for-service practice and is not contracted with any insurance company. Patients pay for services directly at the time of treatment. If you request, we are happy to submit a claim to your insurance as an out-of-network provider; any reimbursement is sent directly from the insurance company to you. See our Financial Policy page for full details.
